WhatsApp QR code business guide: wa.me links and dynamic codes

A WhatsApp QR code business setup looks trivial: the WhatsApp Business app generates a code, you print it, done. It works until the number changes, the van is sold or you want to know which placement brings the chats. This guide covers wa.me links, the app's own code, and when a dynamic QR code from EUQR is the better print choice.

WhatsApp is where a large share of European customers already talk to plumbers, hairdressers, estate agents and webshops. Putting a QR code on a van, a shop window or a parcel insert that opens a chat is the shortest route from paper to conversation. There are three ways to do it, and they behave very differently once the code is printed. This article explains the wa.me link format, what the WhatsApp Business app's built-in QR code does, and when a dynamic code pays for itself. All WhatsApp facts come from WhatsApp's help centre and Meta's developer documentation, checked 30 September 2026.

Three ways to put WhatsApp behind a code

The first way is the code the WhatsApp Business app generates for you. It encodes a wa.me/message link with a short code that belongs to your business account. The second way is a static QR code that you generate yourself from a wa.me link with your phone number. The third way is a dynamic QR code from a service such as EUQR, which encodes a short qreu.eu link that redirects to the wa.me address. The first two are fixed once printed. The third can be repointed at any time, and it counts scans. Which one you want depends on how long the print will be out there and whether anything about your WhatsApp setup might change.

How wa.me links work

A click to chat link opens a conversation with a phone number without the customer having to save the contact. The pattern is wa.me followed by the number in international format, digits only: no plus sign, no brackets, no dashes and no leading zeros. A Dutch number written as +31 6 1234 5678 becomes wa.me/31612345678. You can add a pre-filled message with a text parameter, URL-encoded, so wa.me/31612345678?text=Hi%20from%20the%20van opens the chat with that message ready to send. The WhatsApp Business app additionally offers a short link in the wa.me/message form with a code instead of a number; Meta's documentation shows the shape as wa.me/message followed by an identifier and says pre-filled messages there can contain up to 140 characters and can be updated or deleted at any time (Meta for Developers, QR codes and short links). The same page states that a single WhatsApp Business API phone number cannot have more than 2,000 QR codes and short links, which matters only for large API deployments.

When the WhatsApp Business QR code is enough

The app's own code is free and takes a minute. WhatsApp describes it as an easy way for customers to discover and reach out to your business, and says the unique code does not expire unless you reset it or delete your WhatsApp Business account (WhatsApp Help Center, about QR code for WhatsApp Business). You can change the default message customers see: in the app, open the Tools tab, choose Short link, view the QR code, open more options and edit; default messages have a 140-character limit and the customer can still edit the text before sending (WhatsApp Help Center, editing the default message). For a single shop, one number and a code that lives on a counter card you can replace in a day, this is all you need. The limits are structural: one code per business number, no scan counts, and a code that stops working the moment you reset it or migrate the account.

Why a WhatsApp QR code business setup benefits from a dynamic code

Printed material has a longer life than phone numbers, opening hours and staff. Four situations turn a fixed code into a reprint. The number changes, because the business moves to the WhatsApp Business Platform, a new SIM or a shared team number. The hours change, and you would rather send scans outside opening hours to a contact form or a booking page than let a chat sit unanswered until Monday. The team changes, and the sales chat should now land with a different person or department. The material moves, and the sticker that was on the showroom door is now on a trade fair stand where a different message makes sense. A dynamic QR code solves all four without touching the print: the code encodes a short qreu.eu link, and you change the destination behind it in the dashboard. Point it at wa.me today, at a form during the holidays, at a different number next year. EUQR's generator encodes URLs; it does not create WhatsApp-specific codes, and it does not need to, because a wa.me address is a URL.

Counting scans per placement without tracking people

The WhatsApp app cannot tell you whether the chat came from the van, the window or the flyer. A dynamic code per placement can. Create one code for each van, one for the window, one for the parcel insert, all pointing to the same wa.me link, and read the scan analytics per code: scans over time by country, device, browser and language. EUQR counts at the redirect, sets no cookie and never stores raw IP addresses; analytics are aggregated from hashes that rotate daily and hosted in Amsterdam. You learn that van three brings twice the chats of van one, without knowing who scanned. That is the level of insight a small business needs to decide where the next sticker goes.

Privacy: what happens after the redirect

Be clear with yourself about where EUQR's role ends. The scan hits the qreu.eu redirect, is counted in aggregate, and the phone is sent to wa.me. From that moment the customer is inside WhatsApp, which is operated by Meta, under Meta's terms and privacy policy. The chat, the phone number and the message content live there, not on EUQR's servers. If you use the WhatsApp Business Platform, your own agreements with Meta and your business-to-customer messaging rules apply. EUQR gives you a clean, cookie-free path to the chat and a count of how many took it; it does not and cannot change what happens inside the app. Mention WhatsApp by name next to the code so nobody is surprised by where they land.

Conventions for the pre-filled text

A good pre-filled message does three things: it tells you where the scan came from, it saves the customer typing, and it stays short enough that they will not delete it. Keep it under one line and include the placement in plain words: Hi, I scanned the code on the van and would like a quote. Hi, I saw the window sticker, is the shop open today? Avoid questions the customer has to answer inside the message, avoid marketing language, and never put a customer name, order number or personal detail in the text, because that turns a shared link into a per-recipient identifier. If you use EUQR's URL shortener in front of wa.me, the pre-filled text sits in the destination URL and can be edited later, so a typo on ten thousand flyers costs nothing.

Worked example: a kitchen installer with four vans

A kitchen installer runs four vans, a showroom and a stand at two trade fairs a year. Each van gets its own dynamic code on the rear doors, sized for the car behind at a traffic light, with the pre-filled text naming the van. The showroom door gets a fifth code. All five point to the same wa.me link of the shared sales number. In November the company moves the sales chat to the WhatsApp Business Platform with a new number; the five destinations are changed in ten minutes and no van visits the sign writer. Over Christmas the codes point to a booking form instead, because nobody answers chats on the 25th. In the dashboard, van two turns out to bring most of the evening scans, which is when the vans are parked at home on residential streets. The same scenario for a person rather than a company, a sole trader who wants a chat button, a phone number and a save-to-contacts option in one place, is what the digital business card page is for.

Setting it up on EUQR

Create a dynamic QR code on the homepage generator, paste the wa.me link with your number and pre-filled text as the destination, choose your colours and error correction level, download the SVG for the sign writer and the PNG for screens. Repeat per placement. Starter costs €0.99 per month or €9.90 per year for 10 dynamic codes, 50 short links and 30 days of analytics; Pro costs €9 per month or €90 per year for 50 codes, 250 links, 90 days of analytics and EPS and PDF export, according to the pricing page checked 30 September 2026, excluding VAT. Scans are unlimited on every plan. If you ever cancel, your codes show your own Recovery Page for 90 days, with your name, logo and, if you like, the WhatsApp link itself, before falling back to a generic EUQR page. The van keeps working while you decide what comes next.

Frequently asked questions

What is the correct format for a wa.me link?
wa.me followed by the phone number in international format as digits only: no plus sign, brackets, dashes or leading zeros, so +31 6 1234 5678 becomes wa.me/31612345678. Add a pre-filled message with a URL-encoded text parameter. The WhatsApp Business app also offers a wa.me/message short link with a code instead of the number.
Does the WhatsApp Business QR code expire?
No. WhatsApp's help centre says the unique QR code does not expire unless you reset it or delete your WhatsApp Business account, checked 30 September 2026. Meta's developer documentation says the same for API-generated codes. It does stop working if you reset it, which is one reason to put a dynamic code in front of it on long-lived print.
Can EUQR create a WhatsApp QR code?
EUQR creates QR codes for URLs, and a wa.me link is a URL. Paste wa.me followed by your number and optional pre-filled text as the destination of a dynamic code, print the code, and change the destination later if the number, the hours or the team changes. EUQR does not generate WhatsApp-specific codes and does not need to.
How do I know which placement brings the WhatsApp chats?
Use one dynamic code per placement, van, window, flyer or parcel insert, all pointing to the same wa.me link, and read the scan counts per code in EUQR's analytics. Counts are aggregated by country, device, browser and language, with no cookies and no raw IP addresses stored, so you learn which placement works without tracking individuals.
What happens to the customer's data after the scan?
The scan is counted in aggregate on EUQR's servers in Amsterdam and the phone is redirected to wa.me. From there the customer is inside WhatsApp, operated by Meta under Meta's terms and privacy policy. The chat, the phone number and the messages live with Meta, not with EUQR. Say next to the code that it opens WhatsApp so nobody is surprised.
